Christianity is one of the three main monotheistic religions originating about two thousand years ago. With over two billion followers, Christianity is the largest religion and makes up about 33% of the world population. Christianity's founder is Jesus Christ who was born over two thousand years ago. He traveled and he called upon people, his disciples, to teach his ways and to be "fishers of men." Descending from Judaism, Christianity's main belief is that Jesus is the messiah and that he lived, died, and rose from the dead to save humanity from their sins. Another important concept is that their is only one God, but there are three elements to this one God: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Also important is the belief that Jesus was born of a virgin. The sacred text is the Christian Bible which is comprised of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Within Christianity there are over 30,000 different Christian groups, and the three main groups are Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox. In order to reach salvation Christians believe they must follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Also Christians receive sacraments, such as Baptism and Reconciliation, throughout their lives. For Christians, the Holy Land is the most sacred area in the world. This is where Jesus Christ was born, lived, taught, and died. Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem are all cities located in the Holy Land.
